Things We Made

Old Deck, New Deck

Finished Product 2

Old Deck Alright so here is the best picture of our old deck I can find. The first bad thing about this deck is…. it’s Orange.  Sorry folks Decks should not be painted. Second thing, its rotten to the core.

We had a hail storm last summer and the insurance company gave us some $$ ( not very much) to “Repaint” the deck ( refer to my statement above).

So me and the bride were trying to comply. We borrowed a power washer and tried to strip the old paint off… no go. the rotten wood just started falling apart.

So we decided to fulfill one of our dreams of rebuilding and expanding the deck.

Start Framing ExtensionAs the insurance story goes we didn’t meat the deadline for relishing the deck so they told us they weren’t going to pay our depreciation ( $46.00) so my awesome bride called the insurance adjuster and let him have it explaining that we had already put way more money into rebuilding the deck then it would have cost to paint it. after a few back an forth conversations the insurance company agreed we were going above and beyond.

Adding the rail! We had put all the floor boards on and i decided i needed to go Elk hunting. we got skunked but when I came home the little lady and her BFF  had put up most of the rail! WOW! work I didn’t have to do I was pretty excited about that. Building a deck is pretty hard work. we had also put up a new privacy fence that looks way better than just using fence pickets. Thanks Pinterest! (you can see it in one of the next picture). We finished the rail that evening and over the next few days himmed and haughed about what stain/finish we were gonna use. we didn’t want anything that looked like the Orange we had.

Ultra AdvancedThe love of my life had decided to go with a golden honey stain and sealer all in one ( after returning the previous stain we bought) and off to work we went. took us about 9 hours, with several interruptions from the myriad of children we had running around our house,  to get the whole thing covered but the results were exactly what she wanted the deck of her dreams!

And the westside

Now we just have to wait for the stain to dry! then onto…. Furniture…. Yikes!

All in all I think we spent about $1100.00 to complete this project. and I think it was well worth it and adds to the enjoyment of our home.
